Tommy Horton’s Tuesday, November 15. “Tommy had a rotten Monday. If only the thing had gone to trial and that Spanish onion put behind bars, Billy would have turned in gratitude to fall into Tommy’s arms. But he feels a little bit better today, not exactly hunky-dory, but better. In fact, he’s feeling quite rational after a sleepless night. While he didn’t know that Billy Logan was actually gay, everything was okey-dokey. Now the game has changed. As they cliché, football is a game of two halves. Billy Logan’s had his first half, now it’s Tommy’s half, and trust him, if there’s to be injury time there’s a certain Spanish striker who will be paying the referee his overtime fee.”

I sit down at my iMac and Google Attitude magazine. Yes, there’s the logo. Shift-cmd-4 and marquee it. The Mac makes a camera shutter sound and the .png file appears on my desktop. Dickery-dock and into Photoshop and a new document, not too big. Open the Attitude logo and paste it in. Where should it go? Just up there to the top left, I think. Then I choose one of my Photo Booth portraits, one where I’m not staring too fixedly at the lens like a dork in clover, bring it in, resize and crop it to fit. Nifty-nice. Now all I need is some blurb that identifies me as a journalist for the magazine with a quickly scrawled signature for the editor and publisher, and there we are.

I print out the result on a medium-weight card, and it’s very bobby-soxer. Tomorrow, I’ll pop around to the Instaprint shop and get it laminated.

What’s a boy supposed to do. The killer in me is the killer in you.

Oh, yes, Billy Corgan knew what he was saying…

Disarm you with a smile and cut you like you want me to.

I put the computer to sleep and stare at my reflection in the black glass. Cut that little child inside of me, and such a part of you… Oh yes, William Michael Logan, that’s a face you’ll remember the rest of your life. Now, Mr. Clever Boots Márquez with all the fancy names, all I have to do is disarm you with a smile. Well, not quite.

There has to be a bomb.
